How to Recycle in North Arlington

The following items are required by law to be recycled by all households: newspapers, magazines, commingled glass, aluminum, tin and recyclable plastics; refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners; grass and leaves. The Borough¼s recycling ordinance also requires residents to separate household batteries for safe disposal a hazardous waste.

Commingled Recyclables
Mix aluminum and tin cans, glass bottles and jars and plastic containers in a reusable container and place it at curbside for collection. Cans and bottles must be rinsed clean with caps removed. No paper or plastic bags. Acceptable plastics include soda bottles, milk and water jugs, household detergent containers and items labeled for recycling. No PVC materials.
 
Appliances
Appliances containing Freon gas refrigerators, freezers and air must be recycled. Included are conditioners. Place curbside with doors removed on any weekday. Residents must call 201-991-5400 to schedule an appliance pickup. Other large metal appliances such as stoves, hot water heaters, washers and dryers may be placed curbside on your regular garbage pickup days.
 
Exclusions
Light bulbs and tubes, china/ dishware items and household pots and pans are NOT recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your regular household garbage.
 
Newspapers/ Magazines
Recycle clean newsprint, magazines and catalogues. Newspapers should be tied in one-foot bundles. Please do not use plastic bags.
 
Phone Books
Telephone directories can be placed at curbside on regular newspaper pickup days.
 
Grass and Leaves
Grass clippings should be put out in containers or in biodegradable paper bags weighing no more than 40 pounds. Do not fill garbage containers more than half way. Biodegradable paper bags are also preferred for disposal of leaves. Leaves, whether piled at the curb or bagged, are removed on posted street sweeping days. Biodegradable paper bags may be purchased at the Tax Office in Borough Hall, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please note: plastic bags are not acceptable for grass and leaves. Residents are encouraged to use mulching mowers that leave grass clippings on lawns to naturally fertilize the soil.
 
Household Batteries
Batteries must be separated for disposal as a hazardous waste. Batteries can be brought to the department of Public Works, 50 Disposal Road, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
